How can I tell if someone is scamming me on Craigslist?
Craigslist is the number one thing I get asked about but there are many other scams to watch for, more on that at the end!
I sell a lot of stuff on Craigslist and have received many attempts at defrauding money from me, and it is so common, and I get asked about it so much, I thought I would give you a short example of the most common one I see when selling items online, especially on Craigslist.
The first response is usually a text or an email, responding to the ad, saying they are interested in the item, but are out of the country, so they need to get your PayPal email address to send payment.
If you fall for their scam, you might then receive an email that looks like this: Looks pretty legit right? You will find that if you login to your PayPal account, there will be no deposit. The problem is some people have fallen victim by believing this email and shipping the item to the scammer without ever getting payment!
I have found that for some reason this scam is very often from Nigeria of all places but could come from anywhere.
Craigslist keeps a pretty good eye on this type of fraud, problem is some people don’t take proper precautions. If you would like to know more about protecting yourself, they have a lot of suggestions here http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams
This is a great video a fellow YouTube user did in 2014 that is still pretty relevant, and its to the point.
